August 20, 2011

Toronto, Ontario

Dear Friends,

Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination.

Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue.

I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected.

I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately the same timelines as in 2003, so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election.

A few additional thoughts:

To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please don’t be discouraged that my own journey hasn’t gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer.

To the members of my party:

we’ve done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has been a privilege to lead the New Democratic Party and I am most grateful for your confidence, your support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward. Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government.

To the members of our parliamentary caucus:

I have been privileged to work with each and every one of you. Our caucus meetings were always the highlight of my week. It has been my role to ask a great deal from you. And now I am going to do so again. Canadians will be closely watching you in the months to come. Colleagues, I know you will make the tens of thousands of members of our party proud of you by demonstrating the same seamless teamwork and solidarity that has earned us the confidence of millions of Canadians in the recent election.

To my fellow Quebecers:

On May 2nd, you made an historic decision. You decided that the way to replace Canada’s Conservative federal government with something better was by working together in partnership with progressive-minded Canadians across the country. You made the right decision then; it is still the right decision today; and it will be the right decision right through to the next election, when we will succeed, together. You have elected a superb team of New Democrats to Parliament. They are going to be doing remarkable things in the years to come to make this country better for us all.

To young Canadians:

All my life I have worked to make things better. Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada. Young people have been a great source of inspiration for me. I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party. As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future.

And finally, to all Canadians:

Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

All my very best,

Jack Layton

It was a delightful Portuguese establishment that served rotisserie chicken to the Max and good chicken at that.

After eating I suggested we go grab a pint; Yes, My first English drink. We went to this nice bar that had a long line of European ales, ciders and lagers. I asked Chris to pick one for me since I wasn’t too sure what to try (can someone say kid in candy store). He got a Stella, which I was familiar with and it went down gracefully.

After our beer we met up with his Flat mate again and went to the ‘Underground’ to watch ‘Strung out’; an aging American Punk-Rock band.

Once they took the stage the energy in the room went wild. People of all ages and races rushed the stage to get a better view. This tall lengthy fucker about 6’6” stood right in front of us for a bit until the mosh pit started then he was pushing and clawing, jumping and waving his hands around like a mad man.

The band was really good, and the English atmosphere only added to the scene. There was a kid with died blond hair who was the first to jump and crowed surf, being pulled and pushed he kept his balance for a while until he almost flipped back onto his head, with a quick tuck of his legs he flip onto his feet showing off his experience in this sort of situation.

What was really impressive the comradely of the mosh pit, it looked like it was a giant brawl. You would see people fall to the ground and be helped up by others so they would not get trampled. Then right back in they would go. Small girls would be thrashing around beside men three times their size; it was a true sight of unity among strangers.

We arrived home around midnight and Chris went to sleep because he had work in the morning and I sat in the living room on my computer for an hour before crashing.

WESTSIDE CONNECTIONS - BOW DOWN | OLD SCHOOL HYPE

WESTSIDE CONNECTIONS - BOW DOWN | OLD SCHOOL HYPE

My Trip to London, England - the flight

So my day started good, I went shopping in Toronto with Cynthia then ate lunch with her. She helped me pack and kept my shit in order.

Upon my departure from my house at 5:30pm, I met up with Sanj at Ossington Station where we took the subway down to Kipling. It was extremely hot and I was sweating like a champ carrying my luggage. We had a coffee at Tim Horton’s, she ordered a large double double and I had a medium regular, I didn’t want to drink to much caffeine cause I had planed to try to sleep on the flight. After the coffee Sanj walked me back to Kipling Station where I got on the 192 Airport Rocket. It took about 15 minutes from Kipling Station (not to shabby) to get to Pearson.

Once arriving at Pearson International Airport it was easy to find my way to the TransAir desk where I was to check into my flight.

While standing in line, I did a questionnaire for a 2 dollar Tim Horton’s card (I know they really splurged on the gift card) I remember doing one of these before at the MOD Club in Toronto for Benson and Hedges cigarettes who in turn gave me a 10 dollar gift card (I guess smoking pays of more theses days).

I eventually check my luggage at the counter then proceeded to customs, which was really easy and I had no threat of the rubber glove (wheeew). There was a man doing hand swabs, I didn’t have to go through that process and I am not sure what he was looking for, perhaps explosive residue? drugs? i guess i will never know.

I ventured down a long hallway being stopped ever so often by security. They looked at my flight ticket to make sure I was going the right way. I found my gate; C30, it was no problem at all. Right across from the gate was a small restaurant called ‘ Playwright Bar and Grill’. I got a Coors Light 22oz for $8.59 and a Lobster soup, which I did not care for at all, I turns out seafood still tastes like shit even when blended and mixed with cheese.

I continued to order another bevy and another after that. My waitress insisted she get me another soup for no cost cause I did not like the Lobster Soup. I accepted her offer of Minestrone Soup (I am pretty sure that it was the same soup that Habitant cans and sells at the super market) and i ate that shit right up.

After waiting a few hours it was finally my time to board the plane.

I was 4 beer deep and had to piss so bad, but all I wanted was more beer (you know that state you get in where if you’re going to drink more? Well I was in that state). Unfortunately the airline gals, who were really, really cute (TV is so accurate on this one) said I had to wait till food was served (shitty buzz, literally I was loosing my buzz).

As I sat close to the aisle and on my right was an English woman who opted for the window seat. She was a good match for me because she didn’t sit there for more than 20 minutes before getting up and leaving to get a better view of the TV’s, giving me a few perks on the flight. The first being two seats where I could stretch out and the second being able to sit near the window during landing.

Around midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST) they served dinner. I got chicken and rice. It was bland and kind of cold (as expected) but it did its job. I also ordered two beers at the same time to try to get my buzz back, although I downed them in less then an hour it was impossible at this point.

After dinner I requested a kids travel back which was full of awesomeness like colouring books, puzzles and a rubrics cube (which is more challenging than a normal coloured cube, so I don’t know how they expect a kid to solve it).

They started the first of two movies after dinner, ‘Just Go With It’ staring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

I had just watch this move no more than 3 days ago, it has it moments but was not good enough to watch back to back in such a short period of time, oh well what else is there to do really? Yep, nothing!

About half way through the movie the stench of baby shit filled the cabin. I looked around and realized no one was getting up to fix this issue, all I could think of was the food, beer and keeping it down and not throwing up all over myself.

After the first movie I tried to nap, however even with two seats to myself it was still impossible.

After a short period they started the other movie with Jack Black called ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ (What is this TransAir gets all the shit films or what).

I tried to watch some of it but for some reason I just want to gouge my eyes out because it is terribly brutal, so I broke out my book ‘In Mania’s Memory’ which is very gripping true story of a Polish child survivor of the Holocaust living in Toronto, hires a woman to clean her home. Mania comes to believe that, through an almost unbelievable coincidence, the woman might be the Nazi SS guard who saved her life by giving her food and special care in the Reichenbach labor camp, where she was imprisoned during the latter days of World War II.

Once the second film ran through the credits they started serving breakfast it would have been 3 am EST of 8 am London time. There was a snifter of OJ, a cinnamon bun and yogurt; it was very continental something you would expect in a hotel. Oh and Remember that girl that was suppose to sit beside me but moved? Well the Flight Attendant dropped of two breakfast boxes so I quickly slid the second into my carry on so I had something to snack on when I got to my destination, that would be another perk of my flight.

As the plane landed it was no different then taking off, a few shakes and touchdown, perfectly executed (although I would think anything besides crashing would be a perfect execution on a flight). As I arrived at Gatwick Airport in south England I shuffled off the plane and down the hallways with those super floors that scoot you along at twice the speed (NOTE TO SELF: Put in house to get to and from kitchen and bathroom faster). Once at customs I met a English man who talked to me about my reason for visiting, he asked me some questions, I answered, he asked more, and I think I almost shit my pants. No not really, it was easy.

Once through the Airport my journey began I had to locate the train station, which turned out to be fairly easy thanks to Chris’ notes I had received prior to my flight.

I got my ticket headed to platform 4 and waited for the train to London Bridge Station where I was to meet Andy (Chris’ Flat mate).

Andy located me easier than I thought but then again I was a guy with a few bags labeled in the Canadian flags so how hard can it really be? He ushered me to the typical two-level bus and insisted we sit topside in the front; at this point I was all game. The ride was fun and he pointed out some stuff along the way. It truly is different to sit high up while driving, it feels as if you are going to hit and run shit over (very exciting).

The bus only took 10 minutes to get back to the Flat (English for apartment), once there I was offered a beer since it was past noon, I reluctantly turned it down and opted for a nap since I did not sleep at all during the flight.

I placed my bags down and ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

RnR Custum Cycles
